Yeah, using contact shields is a trap: what do you learn players? To run into them.......

poles are a good option. Also when using pads get players to hit and break to the right or left, this could help them get more imuned to game situation

Why do we keep using them, we are only learning players to run into theur opponents, not around anymore. I believe the shield or contact pads have their use but it only limited.
How do you train a half-break if the opponent has his hands full with training material?

Same goes for contact suits............
