Hi,
There is plenty of research on the analysis of rugby... many research congresses have been published - try looking for 'science and football' papers. Alternatively Notational Analysis of Sport (version 2) by Mike Hughes (the godfather of analysis!). These should provide you with plenty of information and are (i think) available on amazon.

If these don't have the biomechanical information that you want, a trawl of the biomechanics literature/journals should provide you with some relevant stuff, perhaps from other sports (such as cricket/baseball/softball) with techniques similar to those in rugby union.

Systems such as Silicon Coach/Dartfish/Quntic are commonly used for biomechanical anlayses, however alternative systems such as Focus X2/SportsCode/Match analyser, are used to 'tag' clips of video so that you can organise them and/or generate match statistics. Obviously depending on what you want to do, each system has its benefits.

The alternative to all of that is to employ someone like me to do match analyses for you!!!!! :D

Great site Martin! I have been using video analisys for referees in internationals as a hobby. It helps me with refereeing and I enjoy it. Thanks for the tips on the different tools that are available, I will try it out.

There are several video analysis programs. I have seen these two:

Expensive and the second relatively cheap. These tools break down the video fragments and store them in a database. Retrieve them through queries like "All scrums in our own 22".

Analysis of movement:

Fot the movement of the scrum half during his pass: think about the breakdown in individual elements and look if you recognise this.
Key elements can easily be linked to "Cue-words" to help the player concentrate.

Hi, ive just found your site and have looked through it, [.....] I have two major projects on the go at the moment based on rugby. My major project is on analysis of performance in professional rugby, via video footage. My other project is on the scrum half pass the movement of the body during this task. I am finding it really hard to find any previous research that has been carried out in these areas so was wondering if you have come across anything that may be useful to me.
