Topic review - The ideal coach

Post subject:  The ideal coach  Reply with quote
Traditionally the coach was ... the coach. He gave training sessions, decided on the line-up, gave advice during the game. This role has changed dramatically, the coach seem to be involved in many more activities. In order to be succesful as a coach, you need to be successful in all these other activities as well. Sir Clive is under a lot of flak since the Lions but he did bring a structured approach and built a Coaching Infrastrucure (Programme Management rather than Project Management really)

Lots of rugby coaching courses focus on some of these activities but what about all these other activities? With this forum I will try to describe how to develop yourself into The Ideal Coach. What is the approach to become the ideal coach? I want to do the following:

Step 1. Define those activities a coach is involved in that are absolutely essential to be successful. Use this forum on this website to gather as much data as possible.

Step 2. Check for each activity how your individual score is.

Step 3. For each activity you can now define what your development needs to be in terms like skills, knowledge, attitude/behaviour.

You can do this from different viewpoints:

 for yourself (if you think you are an Ideal Coach)
 from a coach you regard is an Ideal Coach
 from your perspective as what the Ideal Coach represents

Please feel free to post about those activities that defines your Ideal Coach.

Focus: how do we categorise the qualities of any job? I choose the following approach:

Skills: this is the coach his ability to perform tasks.
Knowledge: the background information, the position of role in the complex "whole".
Behaviour: describes the interaction with others, position, attitude.

A coach is involved in a lot of activities, I hope the results of my little research program is that the succesful Ideal Coach is involved in the activities listed in this part of the forum.

How to coach the coach? Now we have defined the ideal coach, we can set up a program to develop your skills and become an Ideal Coach yourself.

Step 1: download and fill-out this short questionnaire to see what the competence gap is.

Step 2: for each individual activity describe the needed development in terms of Skill, Knowledge and Behaviour.

Step 3: Plan and execute the development cycle.

My advise would be: find a mentor, another coach or veteran player who knows about your coaching style but who is at the same time not to deeply involved in your work at the club. He can help you with this plan.
