Stretching in the tackle will make the gate smaller, making it harder for defenders to get to the ball. In NZ we call the technique the Staple. I guess because of the shape ....

Hello BA,

If you want to play a fast game, you need to rethink the whole presenting the ball thing. Squeeze ball is slow ball.

It is also a contradiction: you want to go forward, in contact too, on the other hand, timing to go to ground in order to present a good ball is also key. Too often players are stuck in a body position / contact situation and presenting the ball becomes difficult and to slow.

Again, gamebased training is essential here: modified game - skill - game.

Skills like judo, wrestling (or "grappling") learn the basics, jackknife is more rugby specific. I saw a good example of a drill on the Western Force website (sorry, no link - you have to delve in)

Good luck,
Martin

Hi Martin,

Was wondering have you got any good tips , drills and techniques to get players to make the long place and work harder of the ground.

The 2 main methods i look to teach is the jack knife and squeeze ball. I have heard there are a few new techniques and methods on ball placement. Would you have any idea what they are?

Look forward to your reply.

Regards,

BA
