Recently I refereed a night game and the weather conditions were terrible. Wind and rain made it difficult enough, but as we took the field I heard the rumbling of thunder and lightening.

Does anyone know what a correct measurement is to judge how far away the lightening is? I presume it is the time difference between the thunder and the flash.

What I always do is count between the flash and the thunder, if its getting shorter / closer we leave the pitch. Do not know of any guidelines....

This is what I do: sounds travel at 300 m/s so if the difference between the flash and the bang is less than 3 sec / 1 km we leave the pitch.
