 Post subject: Run past defenders?
PostPosted: Tue Mar 10, 2009 3:06 pm
My first rugby game since I was 8 is tomorrow. I was playing football for my school but the rugby coach changed me to rugby. I am outside centre, but we have all these plays that usually end up with me getting the ball and running with it my team is under 14's and I run 100 metres in 11.32 secs. Does anyone have any pointers of getting past the opposition?

Cheers,
Dillan

Think about how the defence is running towards you. Try to first run into their line of running (against the grain) to fixate the defender: you threaten to pass him on either side. Then move outside. The idea is that you maintain your speed while the defender has to stop and wait to see what you do.

With as much speed you have it is pointless trying to run through players when you can go around them. Run through players should really be a last resort, maybe try side stepping players or chip over the top and chase it.

Good luck,
Martin

Ngwenya beating Habana for speed..... The best try of RWC2007 I think,
