Post subject: How to start as a coach?
PostPosted: Tue May 20, 2008 7:09 am
Hi Martin,

I am interested at taking on a voluntary coaching role with one of the teams at any local rugby club. I’ve played rugby for nearly 25 years and started playing at the age of 6. Due to being self-employed, I’ve decided to retire at the grand old age of 31. I am deeply passionate about the game and have much to give to the game.

Where do I start? And, how do I go about getting started? Please advise accordingly.

Regards,

G

Hello,

Great you want to be involved! From your question I can see you have several clubs to choose from. Starting new is a daunting task indeed. Find a club that will help you with the first steps. Like giving you a team with the help of an experienced coach.

I believe the RFU requires you to have at least done the RFU Level I Coaching Course, with your playing career that should not be any problem.

My advise is to do the SAQ P-Award too. This will jumpstart you in the world of developing players from a physical point of view.

Good luck,

Thanks Martin,

Do you run these courses? Can I book them through you?

Please advise.

G.

Hello Jeremy,

Try the RFU for a course program, I understand the Level I course is done very frequently.

Look at http://www.saqinternational.com/training/paward.asp for the P-Award

But perhaps clubs will book these for you, if you start with them....

Good luck,
