I went to the National Sports Library in search for material on mental training. One of my players was kicked out of the National Team and we both wanted to get back in as soon as possible.

His problem was focussing, a low self esteem and one mistake would ruin his game. After a year he was back claiming his position in the National Team! Some coaches complemented me on the result and thought he also did a lot of work in the weight room. He did not gain any weight, he only looked bigger!

The book 'The Mental Game Plan' was instrumental in achieving the above success. Unlike other books on the subject it introduces the coach to the principles involved and contains ready to use material. It is general in its approch in the sense that it can be adapted to all sports. I found it easy adaptable to rugby.
The book starts with a questionnaire to assess the players strengths and weaknesses. Then it is up to you as a coach to decide where to start on.

My best investment in book on coaching ever.

Topics include:

  • Assessment
  • Goal Setting
  • Motivation
  • Stress Inoculation
  • Relaxation
  • Imagery
  • Building self confidence
  • and others........

I haved detailed the Goalsetting work on my site. There I discuss the place of goalsetting in your work as a coach and how you should organise this with your team. I even added some forms for your players to fill out.

The book discusses the Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique developed by Jacobson. I used this technique successfully with some of my players. Saw Neil Jenkins flicker his hands before taking a kick at goal? His version of a very short form of muscle relaxation, it reminds his body of the relaxed state achieved in the longer version.......
This Relaxation technique is discussed on my site (thanks Bernd Harmsen).
