Finishing the 3 v 2 overlap is easy

Only basic rugby skills needed to finish the overlap, score the easy try?

How to attack the defensive line? Go play where it is easy to play! Create or find the unbalanced attack / defense situation and be clinical in execution.

For example, the 3 v 2 overlap:

  • Ball carrier pulls one defender with her running line
  • Passes to second attacker, who pulls the second defender
  • Passes to the third attackers who scores

For this to work the passes have to be flat and players should attack the ball at speed. Easy?

Great example by Australia Sevens

Last week I saw an interesting variation:

  • Ball carrier pulls one defender with her running line
  • Passes to third attacker, who pulls the second defender
  • Passes back inside to the second attackers who pulled back that second defender
  • Passes back to the third attacker who scores

Cat and mouse indeed! What a delight to see the extreme confidence of this team dealing with the 3 v 2.

Here is the iGamePlanner animation of the two variations.

General Movement

For both variations the players have to understand General Movement: how attackers can strike and how defenders can create and shift their tackle zones.

Easy?

So my question was: only basic rugby skills needed to finish the one player overlap and score the easy try? Sure, but the tactical understanding is key, like the YouTube example where Charlotte Caslick created the 3 v 2 with her running onto the ball.

Physical aspect too? Looked like USA was tired, that did not help….

So what do you think?
