Rugby Ready

Get “Rugby Ready”

Be responsible and help to make rugby an enjoyable experience and minimise the injury risk.

What does “Rugby Ready” mean?

World Rugby has set up a basic course to educate coaches and officials on the topic of injury prevention. Register on the World Rugby coaching pages (called Passport) and take the course. When you are confident, you can even do a little exam and get certified!

Most unions require you to have that certificate before you can enrol in other courses and that makes good sense.

Rugby Ready course outline

Rugby is a collision sport: we train our players to bump into each other. Coaches want them to “Dominate the Collision”! So, we need to prepare our players for the impact.

World Rugby has set up a traditional course manual, an online course (which I did) and your union will most probably be more than happy to come down to your club and educate you and the staff in a classroom setting.

What I like is that Long Term Player Development is part of the course, we need to realise there are phases in developing children into rugby players.

It also has the injury prevention take on restart, open play and I like the injury management bit very much!

What did this Rugby Ready thing do for me?

To be honest, both Ton Langenhorst and Don de Winter who were sports doctors affiliated to our National union already kick started me on the topic. Don de Winter even wrote a great article for rugbycoach.com many years ago. It sure helped me to get my injury rate low in all the teams I have coached!

So I am confident this Rugby Ready thing will help you get familiar with the topics and give you a better understanding and help you improve on this too.

Is there more?

Yes, with the success of Rugby Ready the educators at World Rugby also created “Scrum Ready” with lots more detail on scrumming than the Rugby Ready course. (I think the S.R.U. set this up).

There is also a certificate on Concussions.
